Tool Grinder
Answer provided by Mike Van Pelt
| Q. |
I recently inherited a Delta wet/dry grinder. I
have an instruction/parts manual. However I need something about the technique
of using this tool. Please advise a book
or something I could purchase to help me. |
| A. |
No books that I know of that give directions other than the
manual. I own several of these units
here at the school. I do believe a good
book on sharpening would be of value to you.
Taunton Press “aka Fine Woodworking” has several good books and articles
on sharpening that would help with techniques and general sharpening knowledge.
I suggest a
little trial and error might be in order. |

23-710 Sharpening Center
Answer provided by Scott Phillips
| Q. |
I have the Delta 23-710 sharpening center. I need to know how to set accurate angles on
both the wet grinder wheel and also the dry grinder.
Will an after market jig help me to set
repeatable angles? If so, which ones
have worked best with this tool? |
| A. |
I
hear this question a lot! The truth is the tool already has the angle on it
that you want to duplicate. The trick is to match that existing bevel and make
that bevel flat and shinny from the heal of the bevel to the cutting edge. Then
use a monocrystaline diamond stone like DMT to hone the edge with the fine grit
for bench chisels and plane blades. Lathe chisels work best if the burr (a fine
wire metal curl on the freshly ground edge) is left on the tool to cut with.
The lathe skew is the only one that should be honed before use. Stay Sharp! |
